Training Scheme & Philosophy

Our curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. We employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including lectures, laboratory practicals, case studies, seminars, and industry internships, to ensure a holistic learning experience. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem-solving, and the application of scientific principles to real-world pharmaceutical challenges.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

On completion of the program, graduates should possess knowledge and competencies in pharmaceutical care system management, public health, and drug manufacturing to enable them.

  • Provide pharmaceutical services in clinical settings.
  • Manage drug supply chain in hospitals, community pharmacies, and drug distribution agencies.
  • Promote rational drug use and safety among communities.
  • Apply professional competencies in small- and large-scale manufacturing in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food, and brewery industries.
  • Undertake research in phytomedicines
  • Pharmacovigilance, post-marketing surveillance, and drug research.
  • General health administration/public orientation.

PROGRAMME DURATION

  • HND in Pharmacy Technology: 3 years or 6 semesters interspersed with practical placement in appropriate settings.
  • Direct BSc. In Pharmaceutical Sciences: 4 years or eight semesters of formal full-time training interspersed with practical placement in appropriate settings.
  • Top up BSc. In Pharmaceutical Sciences: 1 year or two semesters leading to the award of a Bachelor’s (BSc) in Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Master’s in Pharmaceutical Engineering: 2 years

CAREER OPPOTUNITIES

Community Pharmacy

  • Role: The most accessible healthcare professional, providing direct patient care, medication counseling, immunizations, health screenings, and managing chronic conditions.
  • Settings: Retail pharmacies (chain and independent), grocery store pharmacies.

Hospital & Health-System Pharmacy

  • Role: Integral to inpatient care, managing complex medication regimens, ensuring medication safety, participating in ward rounds, specializing in areas like critical care, oncology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, and emergency medicine.

Pharmaceutical Industry

  • Role: A vast sector offering diverse opportunities in drug development, manufacturing, and commercialization.
  • Research & Development (R&D): Discovering new drugs, pre-clinical testing.
  • Clinical Research/Affairs: Designing and managing clinical trials, interpreting data, and medical writing.
  • Marketing & Sales: Promoting pharmaceutical products (ethically and scientifically).
  • Pharmacovigilance: Monitoring drug safety post-market.

Academia & Research, Government & Public Health

  1. Academia & Research:
  • Role: Educating the next generation of pharmacy technicians, conducting groundbreaking research (basic science, clinical, public health), mentoring students, and advancing the profession.

     2. Government & Public Health:

  • Role: Working in agencies that regulate drugs, develop health policies, and manage public health initiatives.

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy

  • Role: Providing direct patient care in outpatient settings, managing chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, anticoagulation), medication therapy management (MTM), and patient education.

Specialty Pharmacy

  • Role: Managing high-cost, high-touch medications for complex, chronic conditions (e.g., HIV, cancer, multiple sclerosis), often requiring extensive patient education and support.

Pharmacy Informatics

  • Role: Bridging the gap between pharmacy practice and information technology, optimizing electronic health records, implementing clinical decision support systems, and improving medication management through technology

Entrepreneurship

  • Role: Starting your own independent pharmacy, health tech venture, consulting firm, or other innovative healthcare business.
